# 1. Pre-Installation Preparation

> What to prepare before on-site installation: checking supplies, preparing the floor plan, measuring the site, and planning locator positions.

## 1) Installation Supplies

The items below are not included in the standard package and must be purchased separately.

| Item | Quantity | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| Power adapter | Same as locators | ·5V / 2A or higher (10W) |
| Cable | Same as locators | ·USB Type-C power cable (USB-A to C or C to C)·**2 – 3 m length recommended** considering the mounting height (2 – 3 m) (extend with a power strip if the outlet is far away) |
| Power strip | As needed | ·For extending power when outlets are far away or cable length is insufficient |
| Tape measure or laser rangefinder | 1 | ·For measuring actual distances and coordinates |
| Masking tape · pen | 1 | ·For writing the last 4 digits of each locator's UWB MAC address on its front |
| On-site Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) | — | ·Used for locator registration and server connection·2.4 GHz only (5 GHz not supported)·Confirm the SSID and password in advance |
| Power bank (optional) | As needed | ·Can be used where no outlet is available (10,000 mAh or more recommended) |
| Line tape (optional) | 1 | ·For marking the reference point (0, 0), zones, and other spots on the floor·Pick a color that stands out against the floor |
| Paper tape (optional) | 1 | ·For securing cables that run across the floor |

Depending on the installation method, you may also need the following.

| Method | Additional supplies | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| Wall mounting | Double-sided tape, ladder | ·Prepare a ladder for working at the recommended height (3 m, minimum 2 m)·Wipe dust and debris off the mounting surface and fix firmly so it does not fall (for rented spaces, confirm in advance whether walls may be marked) |
| Tripod mounting | 4 tripods | ·Prepare tripods adjustable to **at least 2 m** in height·Suitable when wall mounting is difficult or walls must not be damaged (fix level and stable so they do not wobble) |

## 2) Preparing the Floor Plan

Prepare the floor plan file to upload to GeoSpace. You can use an image (PNG or JPG) or CAD (DXF) format.

* The plan must accurately reflect the proportions and layout of the actual space.
* Convert non-image formats such as PDF to PNG or JPG.
* A DXF fills 'Actual plan size' automatically from the drawing, which suits large spaces where measuring the full width and depth is impractical.
Check the following two points when preparing one.
  * A DXF that references other drawing files is displayed without the referenced content (walls, grid lines, and so on). Ask whoever provides the drawing to export it as a single DXF that includes all referenced files.
  * Objects left far outside the building make the drawing extent larger than the real space. Ask for a file with unnecessary objects outside the building removed.

![Two-step diagram: choose a reference direction, then take the bottom-left corner from that direction as the reference point (0, 0)](https://mintcdn.com/onecheck/E2whs2uAjcPfu5dJ/images/geospace/1.site-survey-coord-north-origin-en.svg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=E2whs2uAjcPfu5dJ\&q=85\&s=e3cc40d233cf5fd0daaa4b994fcec727)

Set a reference direction whether or not you have a floor plan. Once set at this stage, the same reference direction must be kept throughout plan upload, position measurement, and verification.

* Choose the top edge of the space. Any direction works as the reference, but placing the entrance on the "bottom edge" of the plan is usually the most convenient.
* Based on the reference direction, take the bottom-left corner as the reference point. We recommend marking the reference point on the floor with line tape; you can then use the same spot as the reference for later coordinate checks and verification.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You can set up a positioning environment without a floor plan, but when possible we recommend
> registering a plan image and placing the locators based on it. If you skip plan registration,
> omit it in [3. Space Registration](/en/locator/spaces#3-registering-and-setting-up-the-floor-plan-optional)
> and enter coordinates directly, based on the relative positions between locators, in
> [6. Activating Positioning](/en/locator/placement).
> Either way, always measure the actual space regardless of whether you use a plan.

## 3) On-Site Measurement

Using a tape measure or laser rangefinder, measure and record the following.

* Record measurements in meters (m) to two decimal places.

| Measurement | Notes |
| - | - |
| Width and depth of the target space | ·Used as the baseline for plan scaling and locator coordinate entry·The width and depth values are entered as the actual plan size in [3. Space Registration](/en/locator/spaces) |
| Height of the target space | ·Used to decide the locator installation height·Recommended installation height: 3 m (if height is limited by site conditions, minimum 2 m) |

## 4) Planning Locator Positions

![Diagram of 4 locators placed at the corners of a space, showing installation height, width, and depth](https://mintcdn.com/onecheck/E2whs2uAjcPfu5dJ/images/geospace/1.site-survey-measure-height-width-en.svg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=E2whs2uAjcPfu5dJ\&q=85\&s=e8b8e5e4e05182b146fd712ad597620f)

Positioning requires at least 4 locators, and we recommend arranging them in a **rectangle (rectangular layout)** so they cover the entire target space.
Mark the approximate installation position of each locator and the nearest power outlet on the plan or on paper.

* When planning locator positions, consider the width and depth at each spot together with the installation height.
Width and depth are measured wall to opposite wall; installation height is measured from the floor to the locator.
We recommend mounting locators at **3 m from the floor** (if height is limited by site conditions, **minimum 2 m**).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Installation height** \\
>
> So that signals sent from the locators to phones below are not blocked by people or fixtures, we **recommend an installation height of 3 m** (if height is limited by site conditions, **minimum 2 m**), and align all 4 locators at the same height.

* If you bunch all four against one wall or line them up in a row, the position shown in the app drifts away from where you actually are or jitters in place,
so spread the four out to surround the space. (Keep at least 3 m between locators)
* Locators need constant power, so check the nearest outlet before installing.
Each locator must be installed where a power cable can reach it; installation may be limited where power is unavailable (if outlet connection is difficult, a power bank can be used instead).

> [!CAUTION]
>
> Metal objects can interfere with positioning signals. Do not install locators close to metal objects
> (e.g., shelves, pillars, refrigeration units). Keep at least 0.5 m between each locator and any metal object.

> [!NOTE]
>
> One of the locators acts as the **master locator**, the transmission anchor of the cluster.
> Which device is the master locator is communicated when the service is delivered. Place the master
> locator where it has the best possible line of sight (LOS) to the other locators.
> (See [0. Overview](/en/locator/overview#3-terminology) for master locator and line of sight.)
